Since opening its doors in 1979, Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace has earned countless “Best of…” accolades—but this year, the recognition comes with a new distinction. The Midwest Independent Retailers Association (MIRA) has named Nino Salvaggio its 2025 Retailer of the Year, honoring the company’s enduring commitment to gourmet quality, customer care, and community investment.
The award will be formally presented at MIRA’s 3rd Annual Chairman’s Dinner on September 18, 2025, at Orchard Lake Country Club in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan. For the Salvaggio family, the honor is both a celebration and a reflection of decades of hard work.
“Being named Retailer of the Year is a testament to the hard work of our management staff and associates—it could not be done without them,” said Leo Salvaggio, son of founder Nino Salvaggio. “We’re grateful to be recognized for the work we love.”
Founded in 1979 by the late Nino Salvaggio, the company has grown into a beloved regional brand with four Michigan locations: Bloomfield Township, Clinton Township, St. Clair Shores, and Troy. Known for its gourmet offerings and personalized service, Nino Salvaggio has become a staple in the communities it serves.
“Each of our stores supports richly diverse neighborhoods with their own demands for unique ingredients, prepared homestyle meals, and customer service,” reads a statement on the company’s website. “No matter who you are, you’re welcome at Nino’s.”
Today, Nino’s children—Leo Salvaggio, Andrea Nicolella, and Frank Nicolella—carry forward the founder’s vision with a blend of innovation and heart.
“We’ve always believed food is about connection,” Leo explained. “What sets us apart is our combination of gourmet quality, fresh variety, and the warmth of service that makes people feel at home.”
A New Chapter in Livonia
One of the company’s most exciting developments is the construction of a new 48,100-square-foot marketplace on the campus of Schoolcraft College in Livonia. The project, launched in partnership with the college and financed by Comerica Bank, is expected to open in Fall 2025.
“We’re proud to make this significant investment in the community,” Leo said. “The Livonia store is designed from scratch and reflects where we see the industry going—lots of prepared foods, lots of customer interaction. You’ll have to see Livonia when it opens.”
The store will serve as both a retail destination and an educational resource for students in Culinary Arts and Supply Chain Management, offering hands-on learning opportunities alongside fresh produce, meats, flowers, and more.
Giving Back with Purpose
Community involvement has always been central to the Nino Salvaggio brand. Through the Nino Salvaggio Foundation for Children in Need, the company has donated over $1 million to children’s causes.
“Our founder, Nino Salvaggio, was a tough businessman with a soft heart,” the family shared. “We thank our customers for their loyalty by supporting local organizations, schools, and charities on a regular basis.”
“We work our business every day, and the fruits of those efforts are readily apparent to our customers every day,” Leo added.
During the pandemic, that commitment was especially evident. “One customer wrote us a letter saying our store visits were the only ‘bright spot’ in her week,” recalled Andrea Nicolella. “That reminded us how much our work matters beyond groceries—it’s about comfort and community. This award is really for them, our frontline team.”
A Message to Fellow Retailers
As the company prepares to accept its award, Frank Nicolella offered a heartfelt message to MIRA members: “We’re honored to be part of such a strong network of independent retailers. Independents bring something unique and irreplaceable to the marketplace—character, creativity, and community connection. Thank you for supporting each other and for helping keep independent retail vibrant in Michigan and beyond.”
MIRA invites members and industry leaders to join in celebrating Nino Salvaggio’s achievements at the Chairman’s Dinner, where the company will be honored alongside other distinguished awardees. It’s a moment to recognize not just a business—but a legacy built on excellence, generosity, and the belief that food brings people together.
