artichokes

Spring is the perfect time to enjoy one of the most unique vegetables in the produce department: artichokes. At Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace, we recently celebrated National Artichoke Day on March 16th  by launching a brand-new in-store guide dedicated to artichokes.

Our Nino’s Guide To Enjoying Artichokes is designed to help our customers feel confident selecting, preparing, and cooking artichokes at home. The guide is now available in the produce department at all of our Nino’s locations, including our newly opened store in Livonia on the campus of Schoolcraft College.

If artichokes have ever felt a little intimidating, you’re not alone—but once you know how to use them, they become one of the most rewarding and nutrient dense vegetables to cook with.

Why Artichokes Deserve a Spot on Your Plate

Artichokes are more than just a seasonal delicacy—they’re also widely recognized for their health-supporting properties.

A Natural Digestive Support & Fills You Up with Fiber

Artichokes contain plant compounds that stimulate bile production, which helps the body digest fats and absorb nutrients more efficiently. This is one reason artichokes have long been used in traditional Mediterranean diets to support digestion. The Cleveland Clinic states: “A large artichoke has 9 grams of fiber — that’s more than a cup of prunes — making it one of the best high-fiber foods you can eat. It’s also a good source of inulin…Inulin is also a prebiotic. Healthy bacteria in your gut use prebiotics and probiotics (also found in artichokes) to keep your bowels regular and prevent constipation.”

Supports Liver Function

Artichokes contain powerful antioxidants and plant compounds that research suggests may help support liver health and protect liver cells from oxidative stress.

Heart-Healthy Plant Compounds

Certain compounds naturally present in artichokes have been studied for their potential to support healthy cholesterol levels and overall cardiovascular health.

Rich in Antioxidants

Artichokes are among the vegetables highest in antioxidants, which help protect the body’s cells from everyday oxidative stress and support overall wellness. According to the Cleveland Clinic, Research from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) found that artichokes have the second-highest antioxidant content of all vegetables. (Only beans fare better.) One cup of artichoke hearts has close to 8,000 total antioxidants.

Creative Ways to Use Artichokes

Beyond the classic steamed artichoke with butter or lemon, there are many delicious ways to enjoy them.

Roast Them Until Crispy: Toss artichoke hearts with olive oil, garlic, and herbs and roast until golden. They make a great side dish or addition to grain bowls.

Blend Into Creamy Dips: Artichokes add incredible flavor to dips and spreads. Think artichoke hummus, spinach-artichoke dip, or even an artichoke pesto.

Add to Pasta or Risotto: Chopped artichoke hearts bring a bright, slightly nutty flavor to creamy pasta dishes and spring risottos.

Grill for Smoky Flavor: Halved artichokes brushed with olive oil and grilled develop a smoky, caramelized flavor that pairs perfectly with lemon and fresh herbs.

Toss Into Salads: Marinated artichoke hearts are an easy way to elevate everyday salads, antipasto platters, and grain bowls.

Layer on Pizza or Flatbread: Artichokes pair beautifully with ingredients like goat cheese, olives, roasted peppers, and fresh herbs.
