Fish and Shellfish....a term used to describe pretty much everything from the lakes and sea that we love to eat.

Between the two of them, fish certainly gets its due, and is certainly the most widely consumed. Shellfish, although so many of us love it, is celebrated as an indulgence, partially because some people think it’s “rich” and pricy.

Actually, in comparison to fresh fish across the board, shellfish, like shrimp and scallops, are somewhere in the middle of fish prices by the pound nowadays. Of the more common shellfish, only lobster and crab could be considered more expensive than “most” fish. And if you really like lobster and crab, there are still many ways you can enjoy the flavor of both within an average food budget.

For example, extending a dish of lobster or crab with vegetables, rice, noodles and a rich broth or cream sauce using a lobster base reduction, (which by the way we have in our Dairy department), is a reasonably inexpensive way to enjoy the great taste of these two delicacies without getting hit too severely in the wallet. And when it comes to crab, two of the most popular recipes are crab cakes and crab soup, both extended with fillers which don’t interfere with its sweet, succulent taste.

In both cases, adding additional pieces of shrimp or scallop adds additional interest and seafood goodness.
