| | There's no 'Thyme' like the Present to Enjoy Cooking with Fresh Herbs
| | | | | Quick quiz. What’s the difference between a Spice and an Herb??
The quick answer is: An Herb is the leaf of the plant; a spice is any other part of the plant (Root, Bark, Flower, Seed etc.).
If you got the answer right, good for you! You might also be one of the “growing” numbers of people who actually make an investment in growing their own herbs in your garden, an investment that pays off in money savings as well as tastier dishes.
Herbs can be an essential component of a dish and for many people, (such as those on a low-sodium diet) it replaces “salt” as the primary seasoning ingredient.
Of course, most people know the different kinds of Herbs and Spices by the names on jars. However many people, even some good cooks, have a hard time identifying common “fresh” herbs when they see them in the produce section. And even fewer know how to use them properly. But the difference is WELL worth it. In many dishes, you just can’t replace the pungency, heat and vivid flavors of fresh herbs with their dry or de-hydrated counterparts. It just isn’t the same.
